THE COASTAL TERRITORY

Since the 18th century, the region’s most eminent scientists have been studying the marshes around La Rochelle and gathering their collections in natural history cabinets such as those of Clément Lafaille.

Naturalists began to catalogue the fauna and flora of the marshes from the 19th century and help to highlight these difficult environments.

Today we know that exploitation is threatening the biodiversity of these specific areas.

The scientific community is now redoubling its efforts to preserve these fragile ecosystems.
